Fatherly Finds
Father’s Day is just around the corner, and we’ve made it our mission to save every dad out there from receiving yet another boring tie, utilitarian pair of socks, or gaudy desktop golf figurine (unless, of course, those are his dream gifts). For the fathers with more discerning taste, we have rounded up some excellent treasures that are anything but run-of-the-mill.
Is your dad a coffee connoisseur? Why not give him the tools he needs to make a perfect cup of coffee that will equal anything served up by his local barista – he’ll be thanking you every morning for not having to wait in that long line full of grumpy, uncaffeinated people. Our beautiful wooden hand grinder and our rosewood pour-over carafe, which comes with an eco-friendly reusable cotton filter and a coffee scoop, are made by the Japanese company Hario. The Japanese are even more obsessed with coffee than we are; in fact, the specialty coffee craze we’re seeing now in Los Angeles has its origins in Japan. Present these beautifully made instruments of caffeination to your dad, along with a bag of fresh beans from a local micro-roaster, and he’ll be brewing like a professional in no time.
Hats off to your wonderful dad… but have him put one of these handsome Panamas on his own head. We source these dapper hats from a discerning friend who travels to Ecuador to select the best of the best. Each Panama hat is hand-woven, hand-dyed and hand-shaped. Every man needs one of these in his sartorial arsenal.
Is your dad handy with tools or always tinkering around? Give Mr. Fix-It a handsomely rugged multi-tool adorned with antler, or a fun multi-tool that looks like a plain old hammer when it’s all folded up.
We’ve just received another treasure trove from our vintage buyer. Perhaps Dad would like a vintage adding machine or a typewriter for his desk; we’re sure he has a fancy computer but, let’s face it, it can be hard to focus on typing and calculating when the siren call of the Internet is so alluring, and we have a feeling that the renewed fascination with these relics from the past lies in the fact that they just do one thing and do it well. They’re also pretty nice to look at. Maybe Dad would appreciate this amazing leather shaving kit from the ’50s, which seems never to have been used. It comes with several containers for soap, shave cream and aftershave, a bristle brush, a comb and a mirror.
Last, but certainly not least, on our list of fatherly finds are these amazing touch sensor lamps. We’re still thanking our lucky stars that local artist Luke Hobbs decided to walk into the store one day with one of his handcrafted pieces – it was love at first sight. The lamps are at once industrial and streamlined, elegant and masculine. Hobbs collects vintage objects and rusty old car parts, which he repurposes by turning them into touch-activated light switches. Each lamp is fitted with a warm, glowing Edison filament bulb, attached to a handcrafted wood base and finished off with a cloth-covered power cord. Simply touch the brass beetle, the vintage Mack Truck hood ornament or the cast iron gun, and the lamp lights up. Dad will love having one of these unique functional sculptures by his side as he tackles the crossword. Click here to see one of these lamps in action!
As always, if you see something you’d like to purchase that is not on our website, email us and we can make it happen. Happy hunting as you look for the perfect fatherly finds, and Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there who inspire us every day, who are worth more than all the golfball-printed ties in the world.
